couch is a personal app built to help you decide what to watch tonight. This page explains exactly what data is collected, where it goes, and what it isn’t used for. Plain English, no legal boilerplate.
What couch collects
Account info
Your email address (for sign-in and account recovery) and your password (stored hashed; couch never sees your plaintext password). That's it for personal info.
What you do in the app
couch stores the things you save, the things you’ve watched, the things you’ve dismissed, and the streaming services you have. This is how the app remembers you across sessions and avoids recommending things you’ve already seen or don’t have access to. All of it is tied to your account and protected by row-level security so no other user can see it.
Couple sessions
When you invite a partner using a link, your shared session creates a temporary record containing the anchors you both submitted, the recommended batch of titles, and the votes you each cast. These records automatically expire 24 hours after creation. Your partner is identified only by an anonymous session token (or an optional name they choose to share).
What couch sends to third parties
couch uses two external services to produce recommendations:
- An external recommendation service.Your session inputs (anchors, mood, vibe settings) and candidate titles are sent to a third-party service that processes them and returns a curated suggestion. That service’s own data policy applies to the transmission. couch does not send your email, password, or account identifier to this service.
- The Movie Database (TMDB).couch queries TMDB to find candidate titles and fetch streaming availability, ratings, and posters. These queries contain no user identifiers — just the search terms and genre filters needed to find candidates.
What couch does not do
- No advertising. No ads in the app, no ad tracking, no behavioral profiling.
- No selling, renting, or licensing your data to anyone, ever.
- No analytics services tracking your behavior (no Google Analytics, no Mixpanel, no Segment).
- No location tracking.
- No reading your contacts, photos, calendar, or anything else outside the app.
- No social graph harvesting. couch doesn’t try to figure out who your friends are.
Where the data lives
Your account and app data are stored in Supabase (a hosted Postgres database with row-level security) in US-based data centers. Recommendation requests are processed through a third-party language service provider as described above.
How long data is kept
Account data is kept as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, all associated data is removed from the database. Couple session invites expire and are automatically purged 24 hours after creation.
Your rights
You can request a copy of your data, request deletion of your account, or ask questions about how your data is used by emailing kramden88@me.com.
Children
couch is intended for users 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18.
Changes to this policy
If we change how data is handled in a meaningful way, we’ll update this page and note the change in the "Last updated" date at the top. Continued use of couch after changes means you accept the updated policy.
